Amazon Co-Founds Coalition for Sustainable Fashion
Amazon, in partnership with designer Stella McCartney, environmental non-profit Canopy, and the World Economic Forum, has announced The Climate Pledge Fashion Coalition.
The cross-industry initiative brings together more than 60 fashion brands, innovators, manufacturers, and retailers to accelerate climate innovation, scale sustainable materials, and reduce waste across global supply chains.
The coalition forms a dedicated sector-specific branch under The Climate Pledge, an initiative co-founded by Amazon and Global Optimism in 2019 that commits signatories to reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2040—a decade ahead of the Paris Agreement.
Tackling fashion’s environmental footprint:
The global fashion industry accounts for an estimated 2% to 8% of world carbon emissions, consumes approximately 79 trillion liters of water, and generates over 92 million tons of textile waste each year.
While alternative materials and lower-impact processes already exist, many remain financially or logistically unviable due to high costs, limited supply, and fragmented supply chains. The Climate Pledge Fashion Coalition targets these systemic barriers early in the product lifecycle—focusing on recycled fibers, next-generation waste feedstocks, and manufacturing techniques designed to drastically curb water, chemical, and energy inputs.
To overcome the cost premiums historically associated with eco-friendly textiles, the coalition is implementing a multi-pronged approach:
Blended Financing Models: Working alongside the World Economic Forum, the coalition pairs de-risking mechanisms from development finance institutions with private capital. Aggregating multi-year demand across supply chains helps material innovators reach competitive, mainstream pricing faster.
The Fashion Coalition Lever Library: Developed with input from over 30 brands and suppliers, this centralized resource provides a directory of material innovators, fiber-by-fiber operational guidance, and over 100 vetted interventions.
Environmental Policy: By proving that next-generation materials can perform at commercial scale, the coalition aims to provide empirical data to help policymakers draft effective, real-world environmental regulations.
Signatories:
Among the initial 60+ signatories spanning the fashion ecosystem are prominent brands and technological innovators, including: Brands & Retailers: Anna Sui, Another Tomorrow, Brooks Running, Christopher Esber, Collina Strada, DL1961, E.L.V Denim, Faherty, Mother Denim, Selfridges, and Vestiaire Collective; along with Material Innovators & Suppliers: Bananatex, BioFluff, Circ, Ciucani, Pure.Tech, and unspun.
Official perspectives:
“Fashion has no shortage of ambition on sustainability. People are already looking for more sustainable options when they shop, and now the industry needs to deliver at scale. Through The Climate Pledge, we’re bringing together more than 60 fashion and retail brands, manufacturers, and innovators to help make that happen,” said Kara Hurst, Chief Sustainability Officer, Amazon.
“For over two decades, I’ve worked alongside innovators proving that fashion can be made differently. The solutions already exist. What’s been missing is the industry-wide commitment to help them scale. The Climate Pledge Fashion Coalition is about turning innovation into infrastructure, creating real demand for the next generation of materials, and giving the pioneers a pathway from breakthrough to industry standard,” said Stella McCartney, Founder and Creative Director, Stella McCartney.
“Making sustainable materials the default rather than the premium choice requires entire value chains to move together. The Climate Pledge Fashion Coalition is designed to enable that alignment to ultimately increase the confidence that can unlock investment to scale. This is how we can accelerate adoption today, not a decade from now,” said Clemence Schmid, Head, Circular Economy Transformation; and Director, Global Plastic Action Partnership, World Economic Forum.
“Transitions of this scale don’t happen brand by brand—they happen when an industry moves together. By diversifying fashion’s fiber basket with emerging next-generation materials, this coalition builds more resilient supply chains, reduces sourcing risk, and keeps vital forests standing,” said Nicole Rycroft, Founder and Executive Director, Canopy.
Outlook:
By addressing structural bottlenecks through aggregated demand and blended financing, the coalition seeks to shift sustainable fashion from a premium luxury to the market standard. Over time, these efforts are expected to lower production costs, making environmentally friendly fashion choices accessible to consumers across all price points.
