Unifi Launches a Product to Verify the Supply Chain Origin of Yarn
Greensboro, North Carolina-based Unifi says it has launched an industry-wide initiative to verify polyester filament yarn origins throughout the supply chain.
The textile company partnered with leading polyester filament yarn manufacturers across North and Central America to create YarnProof. The product uses Unifi technology FibreTrace to embed a tracer into polyester filament yarn during production.
A proprietary scanner can detect the tracer at designated points across the supply chain, including yarn, fabric, and finished goods.
Unifi says its YarnProof product “adds a layer of verifiable evidence that strengthens trade integrity, protects compliant supply chains, and supports regional manufacturing.” It will support compliance with free trade agreements with countries including Canada, Mexico, and many Central American countries.
“Traditional methods of fraud detection, such as document review and site visits, remain important,” said Kim Glas, CEO of the National Council of Textile Organizations. “With the launch of YarnProof, the region gains a new tool for substantiating origin claims, giving brands greater confidence in their sourcing decisions while creating additional opportunities for North and Central American manufacturing.”
North and Central American polyester filament manufacturers have united behind YarnProof to strengthen confidence in regional sourcing programs, according to a release from Unifi.
“Strong regional manufacturing depends on trust, transparency, and consistent enforcement of trade requirements,” said Allen Jacoby, president of Technical Textiles at Milliken & Company. “The ability to verify material origin through immediate physical evidence strengthens compliance, improves transparency, and builds confidence across the supply chain.”
Unifi has North Carolina manufacturing locations in Greensboro, Reidsville, Yadkinville, and Madison, as well as Brazil, China, Colombia, El Salvador, and Turkey.
As of June 28, Unifi employed 2,435 workers, including 1,153 outside of the United States.
