Who Manufactures Zippers Today
If you have ever taken a close look at the zippers on your clothes, you have probably noticed the letters “YKK” in all capitals, on a lot of them. They’re on everything from jeans to coats to sleeping bags.
Those letters stand for “Yoshida Kogyo Kabushikikaisha” which, from Japanese, roughly translates to “Yoshida Company Limited.” It’s a zipper manufacturer named after Tadao Yoshida, who founded it in 1934. By one estimate, the company makes half the zippers on Earth, which is more than 7 billion zippers each year. YKK has a reputation unrivaled in the fashion industry. It is completely vertically integrated, which means that the company controls every part of the zipper manufacturing process, from smelting the metal to packaging the finished zippers.
Yoshida didn’t invent zippers. Actually, zippers were invented by an American, Whitcomb L. Judson, in the 1890s. He called it a “chain lock fastener.” His company now exists, with an improved zipper design, as Talon, Inc. Talon is a brand of zippers, historically significant as the first company to mass-produce zippers. Founded in 1893 as the Universal Fastener Company, it later became Talon and revolutionized clothing fasteners.
Talon and YKK are both well-known, but YKK has become the dominant force in the industry. Talon was a leading zipper producer, particularly in the U.S. Still, YKK’s rise in the latter half of the 20th century saw it overtake Talon in terms of global market share and production volume. While Talon still exists and produces zippers, they are more specialized, focusing on niche markets. At the same time, YKK offers a broader range of zippers for various applications. Talon zippers are known for their quality and are available in multiple materials like metal, coil, and molded plastic.
